Confused about rental car insurance? We try to take the mystery out of rental car insurance. The best way to do that is to be transparent.
Bottom line up front: no matter who you hire with, every hirer is liable for any loss or damage to the rental vehicle and its accessories. Every Buzzy rental car hire comes with basic vehicle insurance included in the daily hire charge. Buzzy Rental Cars insurance is GENUINE. It is COMPREHENSIVE. And it is provided by a worldwide insurance company - Zurich Auto Ltd.
The only EXCLUSIONS are wheel and tyre damage, which cannot be insured against, and use on any beach and some "adventurous" roads - Skippers Road (in Central Otago), Ball Hut Road (Mt Cook), any road north of Colville (Coromandel Peninsula) - or any unformed road, any beach or off road.
So, all that is needed before you can take your Buzzy car is a full and current driver’s licence and a credit card (*2) for vehicle and insurance security.
But wait! There’s more! You do need to think about the EXCESS PAYABLE (*1) on any insurance claim. There is no getting away from it - the excess payable on any rental car insurance claim in New Zealand is high and Buzzy Rental Cars is no different.
The excess payable on any claim with Buzzy’s standard insurance is $2,000. To approved hirers, that sum is reducible to $350 + GST at a cost of $15 per day (and this fee reduces for longer hires).
That reduction would also include windscreen damage. However, it is possible to further reduce the excess on windscreen damage, to zero, at $5 a day.
IMPORTANT: Any driver aged under 25 years of age, or any hirer of any age who has held their full licence for less than one year, is subject to an additional $1,000 non-reducible excess in the event of any insurance claim.
In the unlikely event of an accident, the excess payable is to be paid in the first instance. Responsibility for the accident, recovery of costs and other liabilities can become drawn out – we will do all we can to assist any hirer involved.
Please note that, if the terms and conditions of the rental agreement are breached, your insurance cover may be voided. For full details, see our Terms & Conditions page.
*1 The 'Excess' is the first part of any claim, which you are responsible for paying before your insurance cover begins paying.
*2 If you do not have a credit card, it may still be possible for you to hire. We’ll need a security deposit, or another person’s credit card (you’ll need to have the owner of the card sign a credit card authorisation form for us to use that card – and we’ll also need another form of that persons ID, so that we’re all protected.)
